TANSU RESTORATION
An antique tansu restoration commissioned by Charlie Hellstern Studio presented the unique challenge of separating a single piece into two fully functioning credenzas while preserving the original integrity of the work. Constructed from old-growth Pacific Northwest cedar—a dense, resonant wood now rare—the tansu’s structure and grain informed every decision. The restoration relied on traditional joinery with no added fastening hardware, honoring the piece’s original construction methods, and employed natural pigments carefully matched to the decades-old patina so the two new surfaces read as authentic continuations of the original finish. All surfaces were sealed and nourished with natural oil, enhancing the cedar’s warm tone and tactile character while preserving the subtle weathering that tells the piece’s history.
